The jay is a resident bird and thus stays in the vicinity of its breeding grounds throughout the year. It is a very shy bird. It is also a visitor to feeding tables, but usually in the early morning when most people are still sleeping. The jay is also called the forester among birds. This is because it has the ability to bury acorns, beechnuts and the like for extra mouth supply. As these fruits are by no means all recovered, they get the opportunity to germinate and cause forest rejuvenation. You can then see this somewhat as a counterpoint, to the jay's bad reputation as a predator of eggs and nestlings of songbirds.
