The Narita Gion Festival is a major Narita event held every July. It is a traditional summer festival with around 300 years of history and attracts more than 400,000 people during the three-day festival period.
During the festival, the streets are full of food and drink stalls. Ten festival floats and a mikoshi (portable shrine) pass through Narita for much of the day and evening. The streets to the temple are narrow and steep. The stalls and the festival cart take up all the space.
The festival begins after noon on the first day with a blessing ceremony and a gathering of the festival float bearers before they parade through the city. The festival's floats are spectacular: exquisite woodwork, lavish curtains and a troupe of musicians, porters and dancers in colorful costumes. The festival continues into the evening hours, with lights on the floats and participants carrying lanterns. Every day there are traditional dances and processions.
