Hammerstein is a town in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, and is part of the district of Neuwied. The town is especially known for the ruins of Hammerstein Castle from the 10th century, which stands 96 meters above the village. The castle was destroyed during the Hundred Years' War and was once the repository of the Reichsinsignia, the Reich sword and apple.
Jan van Call (Nijmegen, 1656 - The Hague, 1703 or 1706) was a Dutch painter and engraver.
Van Call was a self-taught artist who became known for the many landscapes, townscapes and buildings he drew and engraved. He made a long journey via Germany and Switzerland, along the Rhine, to Rome, producing many works along the way.
