Jan Stobbaerts, Inside a windmill

by Atelier Liesjes

In the half-light of a windmill, the sound of wood and rope echoes. Heavy oak beams support the ceiling, whose ribs run in long lines towards the apex. To the left, against the wall, stands a large wheel with narrow spokes and a wooden cogwheel; the light from a small, high window falls obliquely upon it, casting an ivory-white glow around its edges. In the centre, a woman in a red bodice and a greenish skirt bends over a low wooden trough, her hands in the flour. On the right are barrels, a press and a low piece of equipment covered in dust; a rope hangs down from the loft. In the foreground, on the wooden floor, stand two stoneware jugs next to the dark shadow of a sack.
Here, Stobbaerts chose not the vast landscape but the enclosed space of the craft workshop. The light is the true subject: a single narrow strip of daylight from the window set against a deep, brown darkness in which only the sheen of wood, stone and earthenware glows. The brushwork is broad and fluid, with strokes that make the dust and the warmth of the flour palpable. In this way, a mill interior becomes a quiet, almost solemn place of labour, painted in the tradition of nineteenth-century realism and akin to Dutch interior painting.
Jan Stobbaerts (Antwerp 1838 – Schaerbeek 1914) was a Flemish painter of animals, landscapes and cityscapes. He studied at the Antwerp Academy and remained faithful throughout his life to what he saw around him: mills, stables, markets and the people who worked there. His loose, spontaneous brushwork and warm, dark palette make him one of the most distinctive realists of his generation. An atmospheric work that brings warmth to a dark corner of a classic interior.
