A seigniory is a possession of a lord to which certain rights are attached. As a form of government, seigneuries originated from a feudal subdivision of governmental authority in the Middle Ages. The term fiefdom refers to the territory or fief of a lord, who exercised the full glorious rights in this area. Larger lordships could also be called lands. In a seigniory, the lord was sovereign, i.e. not subject to any higher authority by land law.
