Jan Brueghel the Elder, River Landscape with a Village View, 1603

by Atelier Liesjes

A wide river flows from left to right across the picture, with a wooden boat full of figures bobbing on the water in the foreground. On the right bank lies a village with brick houses, red roofs and a wooden jetty; behind the facades, a slender church tower rises amongst the trees. Two sailing ships with dark sails lie at anchor, whilst in the distance a third boat disappears against the low horizon. To the left runs a tree-lined dyke, and a city skyline fades into the mist. Above it all stretches a vast sky of pearlescent white, soft yellow and blue-grey, with a few birds and solitary clouds. By the jetty stands a white horse in front of a cart, ready to be loaded. The light is that of an early morning or a late afternoon: the water becomes a mirror of silver-grey and the foliage takes on a warm, olive-green hue. Brueghel painted the landscape with an exquisitely delicate touch, almost like miniature work, in which every figure and every twig is given its own place. The atmosphere is calm and contemplative, more idyllic than narrative; here, the river is not a wild force but a lifeline of trade and daily life. The style is that of Flemish Mannerism, with a high horizon and a palette of ochre, sage green and ivory. It is a world in which people and water are in constant contact. Jan Brueghel the Elder (Brussels 1568 – Antwerp 1625) was a son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. He travelled through Italy, worked in Milan and Rome, and subsequently settled in Antwerp, where he was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke in 1597. From 1609, he served as court painter to Archduke Albrecht and Archduchess Isabella in Brussels. He earned the nickname ‘the Velvet Brueghel’ thanks to the refined finish of his still lifes and landscapes. A tranquil, atmospheric riverside scene for a classical room.
