Naqsh-e Rustam is an archaeological site with bas-reliefs in Iran. It is located about 12 kilometers northwest of Persepolis in the province of Fars. A few hundred meters next to Naqsh-e Rustam is Naqsh-e Rajab. The site is also called the 'necropolis' of Persepolis. The name Naqsh-e Rustam comes from the local Bedouins. They thought that the hero Rustam from Persian mythology (including the Shahnameh) was depicted on the bas-reliefs. The site contains four tombs of Achaemenid princes and six reliefs from the time of the Sassanides. The site also contains a detached structure: the Ka'ba-ye Zartosht or the cube of the Zoroastrians, of which it is not clear what it was built for.
