About ‘Yinmabin Township: Phowintaung grotten’ by Maarten Verhees

Phowintaung (Hpowindaung, Powintaung, Po Win Taung) is een boeddhistisch grottencomplex op ongeveer 25 kilometer ten westen van Monywa en 10 kilometer ten zuidoosten van Yinmabin, in Yinmabin Township, Monywa District, Sagaing Region, Noord-Birma. Het ligt aan de westelijke oever van de rivier de Chindwin. De naam van het complex betekent Berg van geïsoleerde eenzame meditatie.Het complex bevat 947 kleine en grote rijk versierde grotten. Het is uitgehouwen in een zandstenen rots en bevat tal van gebeeldhouwde Boeddhabeelden en muurschilderingen met geometrische patronen en Jataka-verhalen. De beelden en schilderijen dateren van de 14e tot de 18e eeuw.
