A replica of the world-famous Dohany Street Synagogue in Budapest which includes its towering minarets and lavish Arabic ceiling mosaics, Congregation Ahavath Chesed was designed by Henry Fernbach, the first Jewish architect in America. Built in Moorish Revival style, it pays homage to the Jewish existence in Moorish Spain. The oldest synagogue building in continuous use by one congregation, it has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. Severely damaged by fire in 1998, it has been lovingly and painstakingly restored to its former grandeur.
