Binnenkant Amsterdam. Located on the Waalseiland which was created during the 3rd expansion of Amsterdam around 1634, the Waalseiland has its origins in the Oude Waal, in which the word "waal" has the meaning of a stretch of water surrounded by rows of poles in which ships could winter or be repaired. The name Oude Waal indicates that this waal was replaced by a new waal, and this was because the Oude Waal was too shallow for the larger ships. In 1592, the first plans were made to relocate the waal, which were realised in 1610. A well-known seventeenth-century resident of Waal Island was Michiel de Ruyter, who lived on the Buitenkant, now Prins Hendrikkade 131.
