Innsbruck's old town with its historic buildings such as the Golden Roof, the Hofburg, the Ottoburg or the city tower is located right in the heart of the city. The old town is easy to explore on foot. Everything is traffic-calmed and easily accessible. The Nordkette mountain range can often be seen in the background, which is particularly picturesque. The narrow alleyways invite you to stroll around.
The city tower is a good 50 years older than the Golden Roof. It was completed in 1450 and is adjacent to the old town hall. In the Middle Ages, it served as a workplace for the tower guard. He kept watch from the city tower and warned the citizens of fire and other dangers. The lower floors were used as a prison at the time. Today, visitors can climb 133 steps to reach the 31 metre high viewing platform. From up here, you can see not only the medieval alleyways but also the Bergisel, the Patscherkofel, the Inn and the Nordkette.
