Paxoi, Paxi, or Paxos (Greek: Παξοί) is one of the Ionian Islands, and municipality (dimos), located in northwestern Greece, south of Corfu. Also, it is the collective name of an island group, of which Paxi and Antipaxi are the largest. The island has an area of about 19 km² and a population of about 2300. The capital is the picturesque Gaios, a former pirates' nest, located on the southeast side of the island. Here is also the main port of the island. It owes its protected position to the two small islands (Panayia and Agios Nikolaos) that form it. Other places of some importance are Lakka in the extreme north and Loggos (also called Longos) in the northeast. The west coast is largely characterized by steep limestone cliffs, which are highly eroded at sea level. Paxi is known for its many olive trees (about 500,000) and the high quality olive oil produced there.
