About "In the face of the sublime - The silent power of Wat Intharawihan"

by Walter G. Allgöwer

About the artwork

Under the glowing sky of Bangkok rises a face of majestic calm and spiritual depth: the face of Luang Pho To, also known as Phrasiariyametri - a 32 metre high standing Buddha in the venerable Wat Intharawihan. Set in golden glass mosaics and covered in wafer-thin 24-carat gold leaf, this monument radiates far beyond its physical size. The eyes, half-closed in an eternal balance between inside and outside, seem to silently penetrate the viewer and simultaneously release them into another reality.
Each individual mosaic tile catches the light differently, as if the Buddha himself were breathing - calm, timeless, sublime. His smile, gentle and almost imperceptible, harbours the wisdom of centuries and at the same time seems to offer comfort and inspire reflection. The delicate lines of the neck, the skilful carving of the lips and the symmetrical harmony of the whole face are more than just craftsmanship - they are an expression of spirituality in action.
This Buddha is not just a landmark, but a silent teacher. A symbol of inner peace in the midst of a noisy world - deeply rooted in Thai tradition, but open to all who are willing to look and listen in silence.
