Anyone vacationing in Greece has surely wondered what the many mini-churches along the road mean?
These little houses along the roadsides - the small "mini-churches" - are called iconostases, roughly comparable to the Marterln in Bavaria.
In the past, these mini-churches were built so that peasants working in their fields could pray regularly even during their working hours. The mini-churches served as a place of worship and a substitute for the real church, which was often too far away. Each farmer could thus build his own little church next to his fields and perform his prayers.
In the meantime, the meaning has changed somewhat: If an accident happens on the roads, people involved with victims or survivors themselves can build a small church there to commemorate it. Either the church can be used as a place of mourning or it can be erected in the case of a well ended accident to thank God.
