Geologists have discovered that this gorge was formed in a special way. The layer of rocks consists of soft rock, but also of hard magma. After the last ice age about 9,000 years ago, it got warmer in Iceland. This created a large lake at the beginning of the gorge. The water that fell over the edge ran into the gorge. And so scoured away a lot of soft sand. But the walls of the lake broke, causing a large stream of water to thunder through the gorge. And so scoured out the gorge. If you walk here you can see how much violence that must have caused.
Photo is taken from the bridge end of the cliff.
