Hverfjall (or Hverfell), meaning hot-spring mountain, is a cone volcano 312 m high and it has a diameter of about 1 km. On its 140m-deep bottom is a small ash hill.
The volcano formed in a few days about 2,500 years ago. The lava cooled almost immediately when it came into contact with water, this created the fine grit used to build the ring-shaped volcano.
The crater wall can be climbed and a walk along the crater rim provides beautiful views of Lake Mývatn.
