One of the architectural gems on Amsterdam's Zuidas is the office building Hourglass, designed by Amsterdam-based architecture firm Dam and Partners. The building's name is English for hourglass and refers to the shape of the building, which tapers from the top and bottom towards the middle. The architecture of Hourglass was inspired by the work of Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncuși. The main occupants of the complex are the law firm Loyens and Loeff and the hotel chain Premier Suites, which offers 115 flats here.
I took the picture in the afternoon sun in October. What particularly intrigued me was the dark band at the corners of the building. Tilting the image slightly, it appears to form an arrow when seen from below. I converted the photo to black and white and enhanced the contrasts a bit. I drew the blue skies to black a little more, giving the building even more emphasis.
