Het Paard van Marken is the lighthouse of Marken. The lighthouse was designed by J. Valk and built in 1839 and stands on the eastern tip of the island. The tower has a height of 16 meters and a light range of 16.7 km. The tower began as a square fire tower in 1700. Later, buildings were added to the lighthouse, which gave the tower its characteristic shape. In 1814, the tower received a fog bell. In 1839, the round tower was built on the foundation of the fire tower. In 1919, the fog bell was replaced by a foghorn.Regularly, the lighthouse suffers from creeping ice. In 1971, this was so bad that the tower was pushed several inches out of place. Currently the lighthouse is inhabited.Since 1970 the tower has the status of a national monument.
