Horse and foal | Horse photography by Laura Dijkslag

This work shows a horse and her foal in an intimate and hushed moment. The composition is dense and personal: both animals face each other, creating a natural connection. The pose is soft and relaxed, with no emphasis on movement. The image is entirely about closeness and attention.

Light has been carefully used to emphasise shape and texture. The mare's warm brown tones contrast subtly with the foal's dark coat colour, while the white markings on their heads add calmness and cohesion to the image. The background is deliberately kept dark and calm, keeping all attention on the animals and giving the portrait a timeless look.

The expression is subdued. The mare radiates protection and calmness, the foal curiosity and confidence. Little is happening, and that is precisely what makes the image strong. This is not a scene, but a moment you normally only see when no one is looking. The details in coat, mane and gaze make the portrait tangible, without being sentimental.

This work appeals to horse lovers, lovers of animal portraiture, natural photography and narrative art. This work looks particularly good in living rooms, bedrooms, practice rooms, riding stables and quiet workplaces.

It fits within rural, classic, warm modern and natural interior styles. A timeless image that focuses on trust, tranquillity and connection.
