Long-shutter speed shot taken in Hong Kong, in the Quarry Bay area.
This place had been on my list for some time. I had been there before, but every time I stand here, I look up again in amazement. The density of the buildings, the colours, the symmetry, and then all those air-conditioning units that complete the scene like little details. It is a visual spectacle that you only really feel when you are in the middle of it.
For this shoot, I went out well prepared. Armed with my tripod, a full-frame camera and a 12mm wide-angle lens, I knew exactly what I wanted to capture. It was early evening, the light was beginning to subside and the contrasts between the facades were getting stronger. I chose a slow shutter speed to properly capture the details in the shadows and to give the image that calm, almost surreal atmosphere.
What makes this place extra special: scenes for Transformers: Age of Extinction were shot here. And standing there, you immediately understand why. It almost feels like you've landed in a film set-but for real.
Back home, I worked on the shoot. As always, I take my time with that. Contrast, colour, sharpness, everything has to be right. Not just technically, but also in terms of feeling. I want you as a viewer to stand still for a moment, just like I did there.
The result is a powerful cityscape that shows the intensity of Hong Kong. A view through to the sky, framed by a forest of flats. Urban density at its finest.
