It is 1988 and Honda is under competitive pressure when it comes to motorbikes. Yamaha has its 750cc Super Ténéré and BMW its Gelande Strasse models. Honda has only its 600cc single-cylinders. Honda had to do something to keep up with the competition, so in 1988 it came out with the XRV650 Africa Twin. Honda had tried larger off-road motorbikes before with the XLV750 but it didn't catch on with the motorcycle-loving public. The XLV was too far ahead of its time and therefore probably never became popular among motorcyclists. The Africa Twin comes out at a time when the Paris Dakar Rally is very popular and catches on. The 650 is quickly succeeded by the XRV 750 which is on sale until early 2003, after which it goes quiet. In 2016, the silence is broken and Honda comes out with a new Africa Twin model, the CRF1000 and later the CRF1100
