Historical sign at Checkpoint Charlie (near the old Berlin Wall)
Checkpoint Charlie was a famous border crossing between East and West Berlin during the Cold War, named after the third letter of the NATO alphabet. It was the only passage for foreigners and diplomats between the US and Soviet sectors and was the scene of tensions and escape attempts.
'You are leaving the American sector' the sign reads when trying to travel from West Berlin to East Berlin. The same sign, but at the back, reads 'You are entering the American sector. Carrying weapons off duty forbidden. Obey traffic rules'.
