Hippos are impressive swimmers and can stay in the water for hours. Although they appear massive, they are very good swimmers, especially in the deep waters of their natural habitats. rospite their powerful appearance, hippos can run amazingly fast, especially when they feel threatened. An adult hippopotamus can reach speeds of up to 30 km/h. Although they are often seen in groups, hippos are rather territorial and tend to live alone or in small family groups. Encountering a hippo can be very dangerous as they defend their territory vehemently. Even though hippos often seem quite peaceful, they are among the most dangerous and aggressive animals in Africa. Hippos are mainly nocturnal and spend most of their day in the water. At dusk, however, they come to the shore to graze. Hippos are at home in many waters in Africa, from rivers and lakes to mangroves and lagoons. Their habitat extends across many countries and regions of the continent.
