Henri Rousseau was a self-taught artist who worked as a customs agent on the outskirts of Paris. His visionary paintings, especially those with the jungle theme, fascinated the art world with their depictions of lush plant and animal life, painted with incredible detail and precision. Rousseau made 'The Waterfall' in the last year of his life, and it may have remained unfinished: a few leaves on the branches of the tree in the left foreground are missing some of the artist's characteristic overlapping layers of colour. Although Rousseau depicted exotic, faraway places, he never set foot outside France. His imaginary scenes were inspired by visits to Paris zoos and botanical gardens, and images from postcards, photographs's and illustrated diaries.
Henri Julien Félix Rousseau (Laval, France, 21 May 1844 - Paris, 2 September 1910) was a French painter. He was nicknamed "Le Douanier" because he worked in customs. His work went unnoticed for a long time, but once discovered, it was applauded for its artistic quality. The artist's work was appreciated for its innocent naive and primitive qualities. The artist's art was counted among the avant-garde and post-impressionism.
