About "Henri Matisse, The sorrow of the king"

by Atelier Liesjes

About the artwork

La Tristesse du roi, created by Matisse in 1952, is a reference to one of Rembrandt's canvases, David plays the harp for Sau), in which the young biblical hero plays to distract the king from his melancholy, and to the old Dutch master's late self-portraits. In this work, Matisse captures the themes of old age, looking back to past life and of music soothing all ills.

In this last self-portrait, the painter represents himself through this black form, as a silhouette of himself sitting in his armchair, surrounded by the pleasures that have enriched his life: the yellow petals fluttering away have the gaiety of musical notation; the green odalisk symbolises the East, while a dancer pays homage to the female body.

Henri Émile Benoît Matisse (Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France, 31 December 1869 - Cimiez, near Nice, 3 November 1954) was a French painter, graphic artist and sculptor. Along with Pablo Picasso, he is remembered as one of the most influential and innovative artists of the 20th century and artist in Fauvism, a style with brightly contrasting colours.
