About "Heidelberger Platz Berlin Metro Station"

by Eus Driessen

About the artwork

The metro station located under the Ringbahn, the motorway and the Mecklenburg Straße has an island platform and was designed by Wilhelm Leitgebel, like all stations on the Wilmersdorf part of the U3. Due to the crossing of the S-Bahn ring, the tunnel is located deeper than the rest of the line, which made it possible to make Heidelberger Platz station the showpiece of the Wilmersdorfer U-Bahn. The architect created a cathedral-like platform hall with cross vaults, supported by stone columns in the middle of the platform. Since the end of the 1980s, photographs of the city of Heidelberg can be seen on the walls along the tracks. The metro station is a protected monument.

At both ends of the platform, stairs and escalators lead to the station halls located on a mezzanine floor, where the colour blue dominates. The northern exits on Mecklenburg's Road were renewed and relocated in the 1950s and 1960s; the southern exit on Heidelberger Platz has retained its original shape and portal. Between this exit and the platform there is a long pedestrian tunnel under the S-Bahnring between the metro tracks. However, a direct connection between the subway station and the S-Bahn station was only established in 1993.
