Hawthorn (Crataegus) is a genus in the rose family (Rosaceae). The genus is also called hawthorn or stone thorn. They are shrubs native to Europe, North America, Asia and North Africa. Some species also occur as trees. Hawthorn, because of the thorns on its branches, was widely used in hedges as a separation for livestock. In some places such as the Maasheggen area in northeastern North Brabant, this can still be clearly seen. The wood is hard and fine in structure.
