The beautiful Lake Hawea is perhaps one of the most beautiful lakes of the South Island and yet not so well known to the general public. This is because it is located near Wanaka and therefore also Lake Wanaka. Lake Hawea is separated from Lake Wanaka by a small piece of land called the "Neck".
The lake is named after a Maori tribe that lived in the area. It still has an important meaning for different Maori tribes. Nowadays it is popular with New Zealanders because of its beautiful location and the many activities you can do there. The beautiful blue water contrasts beautifully with the mountains that almost completely encircle the lake.
