About ‘Hats’ by Lisette van Peenen

Two girls in traditional Walcheren dress and a girl in the background wearing the Zuid-Beveland costume. From the age of 4 or 5, girls from Walcheren wear the same costume as their mother or father, albeit with fewer, smaller and less expensive pieces of jewellery. Only the girl’s top bonnet is different. This top bonnet is called the ‘children’s bonnet’ or ‘long bonnet’. It is made of broderie and has a strip hanging down the back, which is sometimes decorated with a bow. This depends on which village she comes from. Her hair is worn with a parting. From the age of 15, the girl begins to wear the adult bonnet.
