The Red Tower is part of the landmark of the city of Halle (Saale). It forms this together with the four towers of the market church Unser Lieben Frauen. Halle is often referred to as the City of Five Towers because of the distinctive silhouette of these two buildings. The tower burned out on April 16, 1945 due to artillery fire and lost its characteristic spire. Except for the tower reconstruction, it was restored.
George Frideric Handel - born March 5, 1685 in Halle (Saale); died April 14, 1759 in London - was a German composer of the Baroque period who was a British citizen from 1727. His major works include 42 operas and 25 oratorios - including Messiah with the world-famous chorus "Hallelujah" - church music for the English court, cantatas, numerous works for orchestra, and chamber and piano music. Handel, whose artistic output spanned all musical genres of his time, was also active as an opera entrepreneur. He is considered one of the most important musicians in history.
