About the artwork

Realistic acrylic painting of the French author Gustave Flaubert, painted by the Dutch fine artist Paul Meijering - the original painting s 120 x 90 cm and part of a permanent collection.

Gustave Flaubert (Rouen, 12 December 1821 - Canteleu, 8 May 1880) was a French author regarded as one of the most important novelists in history. His work is considered a pinnacle of realist literature, although he did not write purely in this style; thus, there are also works in his oeuvre that can be characterised as romantic.

His best-known and most influential work is his 1857 debut novel Madame Bovary, a work set in the countryside and dealing with the adulterous relations of the main character Emma Bovary. The novel caused a scandal for alleged obscenities, but was a major influence on Emile Zola and naturalism, among others. Flaubert's other important works include L'Éducation sentimentale and his correspondences with George Sand, Ivan Turgenev, Louise Colet and others.
