The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a motor race held at the 13.626 km 'Circuit de la Sarthe' in Le Mans, France, since 1923. The circuit is named after the river Sarthe, on which Le Mans is located. During the race, the aim is to complete as many laps as possible in 24 hours. The race takes place every year in June. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the oldest and biggest car races in the world for sports cars. Along with the Monaco Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500, it is one of the most famous races of the year. It attracts around 260,000 spectators, 2,500 journalists and almost 200 million people follow the race on TV. This also makes the Le Mans 24 Hours the biggest annual sporting event in Europe. These days, the winning car covers over 5,000 kilometres. This involves an average top speed of 350 km/h and an average speed of 220 km/h.
