During our trip around the world, we had made a list of places we wanted to see with our own eyes one day. Easter Island was high on that list. Early in the morning, before the sun rose, we drove in the dark to the famous Moai statues. The air was calm, the wind gentle, and in the distance only the rhythm of the waves sounded against the shore.
When the first colours appeared on the horizon, it looked like the sky was on fire. Pink, orange and purple hues blended together, giving the ancient stone guards an almost magical glow. Despite other people being present, a special silence fell. Everyone seemed touched by the moment - as if we all took a step back in time and felt how small we are in the big story of the world.
To do justice to this extraordinary scene, I took the picture with a tripod and merged several shots. This allowed me to capture the full depth and richness of the colours.
