Parrots (Psittaciformes) are an order of tropical, mostly colourful birds. The group consists of two families: Psittaculidae (parrots of the Old World) and Psittacidae (parrots of Africa and the New World). Both families are very diverse and species rich.

Parrots are characterized by their strong, curved bill, an upright posture and clawed zygodactyl legs. Many parrots are beautifully colored and some species have a specially shaped plumage. Most parrots show little or no sexual dimorphism. They live mainly on seeds, nuts, fruits, and other plant matter. Some species eat carrion, and the lories and parakeets specialize in sucking nectar from flowers.

Parrots occur naturally throughout the southern hemisphere, especially in the tropics. In the southern hemisphere, species of parakeets occur in areas with temperate climates such as the cockariki on islands south and east of New Zealand and the magellanic parakeet in southernmost Chile. Through escape from captivity or deliberate introductions, wild populations in the temperate climatic zone of the Northern Hemisphere emerged during the twentieth century, such as the necked parakeets in the major cities of the Netherlands and Belgium.
