About sixty species of grasshoppers live in the Benelux. Many species resemble each other and are not easy to tell apart. They are divided into two groups: the longitudinal grasshoppers (Ensifera), to which the sable grasshopper belongs, and the short-tailed grasshopper (Caelifera), to which the numerous field grasshoppers belong. The short-prits are all herbivores, most of the longprits are omnivores.
