The barred owl is an impressive owl species that is native to the boreal forests of North America, Europe and Asia. With a wingspan of around 100 to 150 centimetres, the tawny owl is one of the largest owl species in the world. Its most striking feature is the dense, feathery "beard" plumage on its face, which gives it its name.
I was able to photograph this beautiful and graceful bird at night in Canada as it sat quietly on a branch. Its orange-glowing eyes form a wonderful contrast to the cool atmosphere in the picture.
