The great egret is originally a bird from the eastern, Mediterranean region. With the availability of suitable habitats, this snowy-white heron has now extended its distribution into the Netherlands. The Oostvaardersplassen are its main stronghold here. This area is the springboard from which other areas are now being colonised. Especially in winter, large numbers can be found in pasture areas, probably coming from both eastern (Poland), southeastern (Austria/Switzerland), and southern Europe (France).
