About "Grand Canal du Nord"

About the artwork

This work is a colourful tribute to Napoleon's visionary but never completed plan to build the Grand Canal du Nord - a water link that should have united the Netherlands, Belgium and France. In the image, we see a dreamy Napoleon with his eyes closed, as if he still sees his unfinished dream before him. Around his head, canals meander, connecting cities and buildings: a symbolic map of what could have been.

The watercolour combines historical precision with playful imagination. Familiar buildings from the Low Countries float like islands in a network of blue-green waterways. The background in shades of yellow-green gives the scene an almost surreal energy - the line between dream and reality blurs.

The inspiration for this work comes from a fascination with forgotten history: grand plans that never came to fruition, but which still capture the imagination. What if this canal had indeed been completed? How different would Europe's trade, culture and politics have been then?

The atmosphere is curious, slightly ironic and poetic. In an interior, this work attracts attention with its wealth of detail and imagination - perfect for those who love history, art and "what if" stories.

What are the delivery times?

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers. Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
