I made this photograph at sunset with the Grand Canal opening wide and traffic moving at an easy pace. The facades warmed while a soft sky held the light. I wanted to keep the energy of boats and vaporettos without losing the calm structure of the waterway.
A moderate shutter showed motion as a gentle blur while keeping the buildings clear. Look for a bright edge on the clouds, a wake that points toward the distance, and a small cluster of windows that glows near the bend. Color is balanced so the print fits both modern and classic interiors.
The mood I aimed for is lively but measured. For me this picture is about the canal as a living street and the way Venice carries movement with grace.
