About the artwork

An old warehouse in a coal mine. Special light shines on taggers' graffiti. This abandoned coal mine has an illustrious history. The first shaft was dug in 1848 to mine dice coal and it was not until 31 October 1977 that the mine was finally closed. Shortly after the first treasure was dug, it became clear that the ground was rich in coal and over the years, a total of three new shafts were dug. In the 1930s, the mine reached its heyday, employing 1,500 miners.

Although the shafts were all dug around the same period, the shaft towers were built in different styles. The distinctive tower for the first shaft was designed in neo-Gothic style, giving the mine the appearance of a castle. The tower for shaft 3, though, was designed in a standard fashion and constructed in reinforced concrete. The miners left their belongings in 1977 as if they would just go back to work the day after. In several places, work lists, boots and lamps are just lying around for the taking. This will not be of long duration, however, as the site will be remediated in 2016. The characteristic buildings will fortunately be preserved - they are Belgian heritage - but the mine will then be history for good.
