About ‘Gondolas on St Mark's Square in Venice’ by Thomas Bugdoll

The Riva degli Schiavoni is considered one of the most important quays in Venice. It extends from St Mark's Square eastwards to the Giardini pubblici. Five canals break through the Riva from the north. They are spanned by as many bridges. The famous gondola is a traditional flat-bottomed rowing boat perfectly suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. Usually, the gondolas are steered by a gondolier with a long oar - sometimes accompanied by cheerful singing. The asymmetrical shape of the boats may seem unbalanced, but it allows the gondola to glide smoothly over the water. Today, Venetian gondolas are the symbol of the city, embodying history, tradition and romance.
