Golden stupa at the Royal Palace, Bangkok.
The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew together form a palace and temple complex located in the Rattanakosin district, the historic heart of Bangkok. The entire complex covers 218,400 square metres and is completely surrounded by a 1.9-kilometre white wall. The construction of the complex under the reign of King Rama I in 1792 underlines the establishment of the administration and formation of the capital Bangkok. Within the walls are government buildings, the royal chapel and residences of the (former) administrators. After 150 years, the residents moved to a new palace in the Dusit district, a few kilometres north of the palace.
The complex is today the spiritual heart of Thailand. All buildings are built in traditional Thai style, one is even more impressive than the other.
