At the end of December 2022, we left a rainy Netherlands and celebrated the turn of the year in Athens, where it was 18 degrees and the sun was shining in the so characteristic blue Greek sky. The Acropolis had been on my list of things I wanted to visit for a long time and now we were there. I always thought I would find the Parthenon the most impressive. It certainly is, but what I liked best was the Erechtheion with the statues of the so-called "column women" (caryatids). In the picture, they are caught in the light of the golden hour and you can see their shadows falling on the wall.
These statues are 2.3 metres high.
Behind them, you can just see a bit of the city - I find this a magical place. Despite being crowded with tourists, there is a reverent calm.
