This panoramic work unfolds like a silent procession of faces that appear at once familiar and enraptured. They shimmer towards the viewer in noble shades of gold and silver - shiny metallic, almost unearthly, like masks hovering between the present and myth. The wide-open eyes of the figures are hauntingly intense: they seem to be watching, observing and sensing the invisible beyond the pictorial space.
The composition follows a subtle choreography of the gaze. While the faces on the left edge of the picture look outwards, closed, into an invisible distance, the orientation is reversed from the centre mask onwards: Suddenly the gesture is directed frontally forwards and the eyes of the figures abruptly seek contact with the viewer.
