Enkhuizen is known as the 'Haringstad' because of its past as a centre for herring fishing. The town is an important tourist centre (marinas, Sprookjeswonderland, Zuiderzee Museum), among other things because of its water sports. In addition, the town has internationally renowned seed companies and horticulture, as well as a cluster of plastics industry. Enkhuizen is (to a lesser extent) Enkhuizen, a West Frisian dialect.
