Kangerlussuaq is located at the end of the approximately 163 km long fjord of the same name. Right next to the town, the two rivers Akuliarusiarsuup Kuua in Ørkendalen and Qinnguata Kuussua in Sandflugtdalen, which come from the direction of the inland ice only 25 km away, join and flow into the fjord. Directly south of Kangerlussuaq is Lake Tasersuatsiaq (Lake Ferguson), which is enclosed to the south by the mountainous Ammalortup Nunaa region. North of Kangerlussuaq are the three mountainous regions of Tarajornitsut, Isunngua and Qarliissuit, while the two rivers surround the Akuliarusiarsuk region.
Kangerlussuaq is located about 50 km north of the Arctic Circle and about 130 km from the open sea, making it by far the most inland place in Greenland.
