Tips for use

About ‘Giant Swing @ Bangkok, Thailand’ by Travel Tips and Stories

This is the iconic Giant Swing (in Thai: Sao Ching Cha), which stands directly in front of Wat Suthat temple in Bangkok.
Key facts
The Origins: This striking teak monument, standing over 21 metres tall, was built in 1784 by King Rama I.
The Ritual: Until its abolition in 1935, the swing was used for a spectacular but life-threatening Hindu ceremony (the Triyampawai ceremony).
The Game: Teams of young men had to swing back and forth as high as possible to grab, with their teeth, a bag of silver coins hanging from a metre-high bamboo pole.
The Symbolism: The two large poles symbolise the mountains, whilst the round base represents the earth and the seas. The ritual was intended to welcome Shiva and pray for a good harvest.
