About ‘George Desvallières - Apollo and Daphne (ca. 1889)’ by Peter Balan

iturn0image0turn0image1turn0image3turn0image6George Desvallières (1861-1950) was a French Symbolist painter known for his religious and mythological depictions. Born in Paris as the son of the playwright Maurice Desvallières, he received his training at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. His works, including murals and stained glass, can be found in churches both in France and abroad. After the First World War, in which he lost his son, he turned increasingly to religious themes and, together with Maurice Denis, founded the Ateliers d'art sacré, which campaigned for the renewal of religious art. Desvallières was also a co-founder of the Salon d'Automne and was involved in various art academies. He died in Paris in 1950.
