About the artwork

Watercolour reproduction Japanese Geisha during a tea ceremony.
A geisha is a professional hostess who entertains guests with song, dance and conversation at Japanese dinners. The tea ceremony is important in Japanese culture and is associated with peace, harmony and hospitality. At gatherings, the geisha had to brew and serve tea, where she could show off her skills as a hostess. A ceremony lasts around four hours and also includes a number of meals. Before a woman could make her debut as a geisha, she had to undergo lengthy training. Even as a little girl, she went to live in a geisha house, where she was taught music, dance, calligraphy, poetry and literature, among others, and learned certain social skills, such as formal greetings and conversational techniques, so that she could mingle with a variety of guests. In the West, the geisha was seen as a prostitute, but traditionally, sex is not part of the relationship between the geisha and her clients. However, some geishas got into long-term relationships or even married a regular customer, who gave her expensive gifts and provided for her upkeep.
