Originally, dense Mediterranean forest covered the island. Over time, the changing inhabitants of Mallorca repeatedly sacrificed large areas of this forest for the construction of ships and houses. They cut down trees.
In return, however, they always introduced new plants and trees to the island. Thus, as a substitute, the Romans planted vineyards, grain fields and olive groves. In the mountainous areas of the north, the bizarre shapes of these ancient wild olive trees can still be found today.
Later, Moorish rulers brought almond and peach trees. The vegetative diversity of species became greater and greater and with today's splendor it is hard to distinguish which plants were brought with them and which have always been native to Mallorca.
